Okay team - Pt. III of my series "What the Fuck is Leadership?" We’ve arrived at a middle installment, What in the Fucking Shit is Leadership? And I am so happy you’re all here.
These are just styles and people can’t just copy them and be a better leader. That’s like putting my boots on and be able to ride a motorcycle.
Leading others doesn’t work that way. People follow people because of who they are and how they show up. And people need first to understand who they are.
Well put Andrew! Styles are just that. You can’t put on boots and expect to be able to ride. But you sure can practice the philosophies and maybe be able to turn your bike, balance, or ride around cones.
I have some paragraphs in there with similar sentiments about “authentic leadership”.
Styles is perhaps a misnomer… maybe.. “skills”. So it’s more obvious that practice is required.
Love authentic leadership, keeping it real in a trust-recession economy is key. And what you said about coaching: asking questions vs telling people what to do. I've seen so much poop in the coaching industry, not putting everyone in the same basket, there are great coaches out there. But the bad apples have really created damage.
Love this piece, Daniel. So many nuggets of real value. As someone who loves the Clif Notes but often wants to go deeper to satisfy my inner skeptic, which of the raw sources would you recommend worth tackling, given where you found the most value and validation?
1. I would love to send you my short list here. The leadership literature is messy sometimes. Let me get to my computer and I’ll send over a personalized list.
2. in the future should I annotate my bibliography with the key take away and whether or not I’d recommend it for study?
To be honest, I dislike the word style, we’d need 8 billion style types to bring anywhere close to accurate or useful.
My style is my style, yours is yours. We can’t possibly grow by copying from others.
Sorry to sound negative but I suspect we’re on the same page.

Thank you for the very down to earth and comprehensive guide to leadership… love seeing the visuals and it truly resonated with me.
Thank you so much David! I appreciate your support. Let me know what I should write on next that you would want to read.
This week I’m cooking up a post on how to run exceptional meetings and how to influence their outcomes.

Thank you for the thoughtful read and sharing your thoughts Morgane‼️🙌
Right!? Authentic leadership is punk rock and inherently useful it’s just inappropriately portrayed.
Amen to that! Cheers (with me coffee hahaha) to the coaches who are helping people learn and grow.
Coffee cheers! 🙌😊

Love this, Dan! Honestly, the raw honesty here it is so refreshing and needed!
The title alone sets the stage for the parts of leadership no one likes to put on a slide deck.
We spend so much time over-complicating things that we forget it is just about showing up when it is messy and complicated.
It is way more valuable to hear about the actual friction than another "polished framework" that does not survive the first week of a real project.
I'm saving this piece for posterity, nicely done! 🙌
Thank you so much Elena :)
Man I am just overjoyed you made my day.
